Spike Lee was one of those potential interviews that I didn't think in a million years I would be able to get. I contacted his studio, "Forty Acres and a Mule," and asked if I might spend some time with him talking about leadership. They said they would get back to me. A few days later I got a call from the office manager asking me again what I wanted to talk to Lee about. When I said "Leadership," she asked, "Movie leadership? Screenwriting leadership? Acting?" I said "Yes" to all of those. She sounded doubtful but in a few more days I got another call setting up the date!
This interview is about as real as it gets. As you can tell, Spike Lee and I have very little in common and we had no time before the interview to warm up or get to know each other. Nonetheless, his insights into building teams and what it takes to build loyalty and engagement are valuable for leaders in any discipline.
